Fred Headon models vintage Canadian Pacific passenger cars

Veteran modeller Fred Headon submitted these CP passenger cars at the WMRC’s January model display. The models of the Canadian Pacific Combination 4208, Canadian Pacific coach 4711 were Pacific Pike kits from the mid-1950s. 

They were assembled with White metal sides, ends, clerestory vent representations, Queen posts, brake fittings and truck side frames, wood floor and roof (roof required shaping to curve ends of clerestory), brass steps and end railings. Plastic wheels were replaced with nickel silver sets.

Sides and ends were painted with Scalecoat CPR tuscan red. Under frame and end platforms were painted with Floquil flat black. Roof areas with single ply Kleenex applied, painted Floquil flat black. Clerestory vents interior area were painted with silver.

Fred used Champ Decals produced by the late Rich Meyere of Minot, North Dakota, and Black Cat Decals of Winnipeg. Interior walls and ceiling were painted with Floquil Central Vermont green. Seats were painted with two different shades of brown. Seat railings were scratch built. Figures came from various sources from the past and Preiser.

 

Neil Carleton brings two models to the Winnipeg Model Railroad Club's September monthly model display

WMRC member Neil Carleton brought two excellent models that he has been working on to the WMRC's first monthly model display of the season. He took an undecorated Rapido FP9 B-unit and installed a Loksound sound decoder. He primed it with Tamiya primer and spray painted it with Rapido and other brands of paint. Decals are from Black Cat. The finished model was sprayed with Testors Dullcoat. 

His second model was of a 1945 Chevy truck box. He used a CC Laser cut wooden truck kit to turn a Classic Metal Works highway tractor into a delivery truck. The model still needs to be primed and painted. It will be lettered for the Allan Transfer Company of MacGregor, Manitoba, using signs made with his computer.
 

 

Neil Carelton displays Athearn Hustler at Winnipeg Model Railroad Club's January meeting

WMRC member Neil Carleton brought this Athearn Hustler that he has been working on to the club's January monthly model display. He is using it to test the colors and making before repainting a larger, more expensive model.

He stripped the paint off by using a watered down lye solution. Then he painted it with Tamiya primer and masked and airbrushed it with Rapido acrylic Proto paint in classic CPR colors. He decorated it with Black Cat decals and sprayed it with Testors dull coat. Windows and headlight lenses were made with clear acetate and Testors clear part cement and window maker.  He finished the model by weathering it with pan pastels.

Model display entries at Winnipeg Model Railroad Club's September meeting

WMRC Past President Larry Leavens brought in a model of a Bentonite plant that he had been working on. Bentonite is a clay product that swells when wet and is used in construction to reduce seepage in the soil. It is shipped either as a powder or in pellets, either in bulk or bagged.

The structure is a Faller Concrete Plant kit. The base of the building where a cement truck would receive the premixed concrete, was filled with corrugated sheet styrene. The majority of the structure was painted with ‘rattle can spray paint’ prior to the assembly of the major components.
The structure will be incorporated into a larger industry, Pembina Mountain Clays, at Scott’s Siding. The siding is named in memory of long-time WMRC member Charlie Scott.

Neil Carleton brought in a Canadian Pacific truss rod boxcar built from a kit. The kit was repainted and decorated with period correct decals from Black Cat Decals. Weathering followed using Pan pastels and then sprayed with Testors Dullcoat.

Presenting the entries in the Winnipeg Model Railroad Club's 60th anniversary model contest

    This year being our 60th anniversary year, WMRC model contest chair Morgan Turney came up with a truly novel idea for the special event - to make a model incorporating the club's 60th anniversary logo! A special logo was made by WMRC blog editor Paul Ullrich for this event, and was made into a decal by Black Cat Decals. We had so many entries for this event that we're going to split them into several different post during the week! Here are the first three:

 First place went to Morgan Turney for his hydrous-ammonia tank car.

Second place went to Morgan Turney for his Baldwin VO 1000 463 diesel locomotive.

Third place went to Suzanne Lemon for her 40' boxcar.
