Paul Ullrich wins WMRC's 2026 President's shield award

Paul Ullrich receives the WMRC's President's Shield award from president John Bate at the club's 2026 AGM and banquet, held at the Canad Inns Destination Centre Polo Park on May 8.

WMRC Social Media Director Paul Ullrich was awarded the President Shield award for rebranding the club's image with his graphic design work. He has redesigned the club's logo, the logo for The Lantern, the club's official publication, the poster for the spring train show and the stickers the club hands out at train shows.

This is the second time Paul has won this award. In 2016 he won the award for his work as social media director for the club in creating the blog and the Facebook page.

Gino Kost receives Winnipeg Model Railroad Club's President's shield award for 2019

Gino Kost (Left) is presented with the WMRC's President's shield award from President Bob Harrison at the club's annual banquet held on May 10, 2019.

Gino Kost is the recipient of the WMRC's President's Shield Award for 2019. The award is given every year by the president to a member for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the club.
And Gino is certainly deserving of the award! He is currently the superintendent of the Gateway Western Railway, which is the club's HO gauge layout that is housed in the Winnipeg Railway Museum. The Gateway Western is the largest model railroad display in Winnipeg. It will be open to the public on May 25 and 25 during Doors Open Winnipeg.

He is also our representative and volunteer coordinator for the Manitoba Mega Train Show, which is the largest train show between Toronto and Calgary. The Manitoba Mega Train Show will be held on September 28 and 29 at Red River Exhibition Place.

Gino's greatest contribution to the club was supervising the construction of the structure that houses the Gateway Western Railway. Gino modified the plans of a prefabricated garage, ordered the lumber and had it shipped to the museum, and managed a small group of dedicated volunteers in its construction. The "house that Gino built" is truly the jewel in the crown of the club, and the WMRC will forever be grateful for all of Gino's hard work. Congratulations, Gino!

Paul Ullrich wins Winnipeg Model Railroad Club's President's Shield award

Paul Ullrich is seen receiving the President's Shield award from outgoing President Larry leavens at the club's banquet, held on May 13 at the Canad Inns Destination Centre Windsor Park.

WMRC Social Media Executive Paul Ullrich won the President's Shield award at their annual banquet for his creation of the club's blog site and Facebook page. The blog site has received almost 100,000 views since its inception in October 2013, and the Facebook Page has over 300 likes.

Paul has been a member of the club since 1983. He has served as the club's photo editor, and has won five Lantern awards for his contributions to The Lantern, the official newsletter of the WMRC. He is also well known as "The Giraffe Car Man". His popular portable Lionel display, which he exhibits several times a year at various train shows, features up to six giraffe cars that have giraffes ducking their heads before they enter a tunnel.

Brent Tingey wins the monthly prize at Winnipeg Model Railroad Club's November model display

Long time WMRC member Brent Tingey was awarded the monthly prize at the club's model display at their November meeting for his model of a CN 36' wooden stock car. Brent has won many awards for his model and for his rail fan photography. He has also won the President's Shield for his volunteer work for the club.

To qualify for the monthly prize, the submitted model must show signs of either some assembly or some weathering. Each entry must include your name and a short write up describing the work that has been accomplished to date. If you are planning to build a model using a 3D printer but only have completed some portion of your 3D CAD drawings, then we would like to see them, but only if the renderings are your own work—no scanned materials! Failure to comply with all of these rules will mean immediate disqualification. Each entrant will submit just one entry. The monthly prize of a voucher in the amount of $15 from a local hobby shop is chosen at random.

See the biggest model railway in Russia

Margaret Ullrich, our hard working, award winning Public relations person (yes, she won the club's President's Shield award in 2011 for her efforts in publicizing our annual spring open house, and deservedly so) passed on this remarkable video to us.  It's Russia's largest model railway, and it IS Russia!

Nearly every single bit of this enormous nation is modeled in HO scale, squeezed in 800 square meters!  It contains detailed replicas of many of Russia's signature buildings and is home to hundreds of thousands of tiny plastic residents from all walks of life. It has to be seen to believed, and if you got 26 minutes to spare, you can see it by clicking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7I_z6k-MOY
